After moving his antique shop from Bethesda, Maryland to Aldie, Tucker Withers learned that his great-uncle's house was for sale, and decided that he must have it. In the
process of making a bid, Tucker discovered that one of the property's outbuildings had been home to his great-grandparents during their last years. "Unknowingly. I'd returned home." he says.
Though the house was in
poor condition, Tucker restored it with the intention of welcoming
bed and breakfast guests by 1982. Now the home features
modern baths and rooms decorated with beautiful antiques---quilts,
hooked and braided rugs, spool beds and 19th-century paintings.
The inn consists of the main house and a log cabin, built
around 1810 as well as The Patent House, dating to the late
1700's.
Tucker's enthusiasm for this region is unlimited, and is equaled by your praise for his inn: Aldie's small-town charms include its many antique stores and its working
gristmill built in 1810. It's protected from the urban sprawl, and congestion of Washington, only 35 miles away--by the Bull Run Mountains to the east and prime horse farms to the west. Cyclists love our
back-roads and there are eight wineries in the area: nearby Middleburg is known as the 'heart of fox-hunting country.
The rooms are decorated
with country antiques that lend a homey aura: the staff is
friendly and efficient, creating a home-away-from-home feeling.
The sleepy little town of Aldie provides country-static peace
and quiet. Breakfast is prepared at the convenience of the
guest and includes items as Dutch apple baby, sausage and
eggs, or my favorite, baked French toast. The breakfast always
comes with an assortment of juices, locally made sausages,
homemade poppy seed muffins or strawberry bread, and of course,
great conversation. For evening snacks Tucker always leaves
an assortment of refreshments and cheese and other munchies
in the kitchen for guests to enjoy.
The combination of quiet location, nearby attractions variety of decor in the antique-filled rooms, a warming fire on cool evenings. and the friendliest of innkeepers
creates an unbeatable combination. The Little River Inn offers super-clean surroundings in a private atmosphere.
This wonderful inn has a warm friendly and efficient staff. Beautiful
quilts and stenciled lamps (each different) are in every room with antiques everywhere. The tiny Patent House is private and romantic, furnished with an attractive quilt, and a cozy fireside sitting area. Having breakfast brought in from the main house completes the stay at the LIttle River Inn.
